Types and frequency of preanalytical mistakes in the first Thai ISO 9002:1994 certified clinical laboratory, a 6 – month monitoring. BMC Clin Pathol 2001;1:5. Dear Editor, The report on “Myoepithelioma of soft tissue and diagnostic pitfall in cytology” is very interesting.[1] Bhanvadia et al. concluded that “a cytopathologist should be aware of bland nature of round, epithelioid and plasmacytoid cells in myxoid and fibrillary background to hit the correct diagnosis.”[1] In fact, the misinterpretation problem as discussed in the present report is a common problem in diagnostic cytology and it is considered as a postanalytical error. Nevertheless, in laboratory medicine, there are also possible errors in other phases of laboratory testing. Bhanvadia et al. might not recognize the importance of quality control and possible error, which might occur in nay phase of the test ranging from preanalytical thorough analytical until postanalytical phase. In laboratory medicine, the most common problem error does not occur in postanalytical phase but preanalytical phase. The problem usually occurs due to patient preparation and specimen correction. This kind of problem can be seen worldwide regardless the quality certification of the medical laboratory or not.[2]

Evaluation of Soft Tissue Tumors by Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology and Its Correlation with Histopathology: A Retrospective Study in a Tertiary Care Center

Background and objectives: Soft tissue is a non-epithelial extraskeletal tissue of the body. Soft tissue tumors (STTs) are the most commonly diagnosed neoplasms. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is minimally invasive, quick, and a definitive diagnostic modality. Biopsy for histopathology is the gold standard method for diagnosis but is invasive. The aims of this study were to determine th...

Imprint Cytology of Soft Tissue Myoepithelioma: A Case Study

Soft tissue myoepithelioma is a rare neoplasm composed of myoepithelial cells. Here, we describe the cytologic features of soft tissue myoepithelioma arising on the right forearm in an 18-year-old man. The excised tumor (3.0×1.8×1.5 cm) was well-demarcated, yellow-gray, soft, and myxoid. The cytologic smears showed round to spindle, epithelioid, and plasmacytoid cells in the myxoid background. ...

Myoepithelial tumor of soft tissue and bone: A current perspective.

Myoepithelial tumor (MET) of soft tissue and bone is an unusual tumor of uncertain differentiation and histogenesis, but lately has been recognized as a distinct tumor entity. This tumor forms a morphologic continuum with a mixed tumor and a parachordoma, but is different from an extra-axial chordoma or chordoma periphericium. METs display a range of histopathologic features, including architec...
